CTICC: Cape Town International Convention Centre #

The Cape Town International Convention Centre Company (Convenco) is the holding company of the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). Convenco was formed in 1999 through collaboration between the City of Cape Town, the Provincial Government of the Western Cape and the business sector. It is jointly owned by the City of Cape Town (50.2% shareholding), the Provincial Government of the Western Cape (25.1% shareholding), and SunWest International (Pty) Ltd (24.7% shareholding). The primary objective behind the formation of the holding company was to deliver a world-class international convention centre in Cape Town that would provide meeting, convention and exhibition services and facilities for local and international organisations and their guests. It was envisaged by the Convenco co-founders that the CTICC would have a sustainable positive impact on the economic and social development of Cape Town, the Western Cape and South Africa as a whole.

Event Overview
Welcome message:

On behalf of all members of the South African Society for Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (SASBCP) we are delighted to invite you to the 17th World Congress of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (WCP2014) to be held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) in Cape Town, South Africa from 13-18 July 2014.

The IUPHAR world congresses foster basic and clinical pharmacological sciences. As it is the first time this event will be held on the African continent, the organising committee is excited to bring a uniquely African experience to this global event. We have no doubt that the opportunity to connect with world leaders in pharmacology, industry and thought leaders in a memorable location defines WCP2014 as an event of scientific excellence not to be missed.

The SASBCP was established in 1966 and over the years has grown into a national society that truly serves the pharmacological sciences in South Africa and the African continent. As a strong, competitive scientific community at the tip of Africa, we take great pride in playing an active, continental and international role. We are committed to fostering pharmacology amongst our young scientists and promoting the field across Africa. The 'Pharmacology for Africa' (PharfA) initiative has become the vehicle to developed pharmacology on the African continent.
The city of Cape Town is an ideal destination for WCP2014 in South Africa. It lies at the foot of Table Mountain, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Heralded by many as one of the world's most beautiful cities, we know visitors will be suitably impressed by its cultural heritage and natural beauty. This is an opportunity to experience the latest discoveries in pharmacology in an internationally renowned tourism destination. We believe WCP2014 will be a memorable experience.

Applications are invited for the IUPHAR Young Investigator Awards, an important initiative to involve young scientists in the symposia program of the IUPHAR congresses.

The awards are open to pharmacologists who are in the first 10 years of the research career after obtaining their highest terminal degree (i.e. Ph.D, M.D.). Candidates who wish to compete for this award should indicate in the appropriate place on the abstract form that they wish their abstract to be considered for an IUPHAR Young Investigator Award. The young investigator award candidate must be first author on the submitted abstract.

Ten contributions will be selected by the IUPHAR Executive Committee. Those selected will be invited to present their work in a 10-minute oral presentation (plus 5 min discussion) in the dedicated symposium. Scheduling will be confirmed in the final program. After the symposium, the Executive Committee will select three award recipients, based on the candidates' capacity to present experimental findings and defend their conclusions to an international audience.

There will be three awards:
Gold Award - $1,000 USD
Silver Award - $500 USD
Bronze Award - $250 USD

Awards will be presented at the closing ceremony and featured in the post-congress issue of the IUPHAR newsletter, Pharmacology International.
