Symposium Summary

Technology in cardiovascular diseases is evolving rapidly. Management of the failing heart and valvular disease are two specific areas that have benefited from recent advances in technology. Mechanical circulatory support improves outcomes in acute and chronic heart failure. A variety of ventricular assist devices are now available for short and long-term use in patients with cardiac failure. Less invasive techniques to address the aortic and mitral valve include transcatheter techniques, robotics and mini-incisions. Transcatheter valve implantation for aortic valve disease improves survival in high-risk patients; however, candidacy for this procedure is limited by strict selection criteria.

 

During this half-day symposium, authorities in heart failure and valve surgery will review the indications and types of ventricular assist devices, as well as the current status of valvular therapy. Additionally, efficient practices in the cardiovascular intensive care unit and strategies to limit utilization of blood products in the cardiothoracic surgical patient will be reviewed. The meeting will include a panel discussion with audience participation.
