MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT It gives me great pleasure to announce that Singapore will be hosting the 14th Congress of the Asian Society of Transplantation (CAST) in the year 2015. Although Asia comprises many of the most populous nations in the world, and thus likely with the largest burden of end stage organ failure, organ transplantation has not developed to its potential among its member countries. Many Asian nations are on the cusp of developing organ transplant programs, while many others have well developed programs. Transplantation in Asia is also unique in that its practice is influenced by varied cultural and religious influences in the region. This heterogeneity in transplant development and practice offers an exciting opportunity to address the gaps and approaches to meet the challenges in transplantation.
With this in mind, the 14th CAST in Singapore will bring together the best in the science of transplantation of solid organs and provide a platform to discuss approaches to the further development of deceased donation and ethical living donor transplantation in the cultural context of Asia. Immunosuppression, immune regulation, rejection and tolerance, transplantomics, surgical and medical advances and complications of transplantation will be some of the scientific themes that will be developed during the Congress. Legislative, ethical, religious, psychosocial and societal barriers to organ donation and transplantation, together with approaches and solutions to address them will be explored. Plenary lectures, symposia, workshops, oral free papers and poster presentations will serve as a forum for the exchange of information, concepts and ideas.
The Society of Transplantation (Singapore), host of the 14th CAST, has already begun working on putting together this unique Congress that will appeal to all professionals in the field of transplantation.
A Vathsala President 14th Congress of the Asian Society of Transplantation
